Target is scheduled to release its fiscal second-quarter earnings Wednesday morning, giving investors a fresh look at whether the retailer’s turnaround strategy is gaining traction under CEO Michael Fiddelke.
The report comes as consumers continue to tighten spending amid persistent macroeconomic pressures, making the results a key gauge of Target’s ability to win back its core customer and return to consistent growth.
What Wall Street expects
Analysts surveyed by LSEG have laid out their forecasts for the quarter, though specific figures were not detailed in the preview. The focus will be on same-store sales, margins, and any updated guidance for the full year.
In the previous quarter, Target posted its first positive same-store sales figure in five quarters, with a jump of 5.6%. That improvement prompted the company to raise its full-year revenue guidance, but Fiddelke told reporters at the time that Target remained “cautious” in its outlook due to ongoing market uncertainty.
Turnaround efforts and challenges
Executives have said they are focused on further adjustments to inventory, product selection, and sales strategy to drive growth. The baby and kids category was one of the strongest segments in the prior quarter.
The recent positive results came after several quarters of sluggish sales, with annual revenue roughly flat for four years. Fiddelke told reporters in May that the company’s “work is just beginning,” signaling that the recovery would take time.
Investor skepticism remains
Despite the improved sales trend, some investors are still waiting for more evidence. Analysts at Deutsche Bank Research wrote in a Friday note that they “remain sidelined” until they see clearer signs that the recent growth reflects sustainable market share gains.
“We believe the more important debate is whether improving store and merchandising execution supports confidence in growth durability in FY27 and beyond,” the analysts said.
Target’s stock has risen more than 55% this year, reflecting some optimism about the company’s direction, but the upcoming earnings report will test whether that enthusiasm is justified.
