Synchrony Financial, the credit card issuer behind store cards for Amazon, Walmart and Lowe’s, said Monday it is teaming up with OpenAI to bring the artificial intelligence company’s models into its consumer-facing portals.
The collaboration, still in its early stages, is designed to help Synchrony stay relevant as AI agents increasingly assist shoppers with researching and buying products online, the company said.
OpenAI’s Kaylin Voss, vice president of Americas and Industries, framed the partnership as hitting on both sides of the commerce experience: improving the tools Synchrony offers its customers and partners while also deploying OpenAI’s models across Synchrony’s own internal operations.
“AI is creating an opportunity to reimagine the entire commerce experience, from how customers discover products to how they pay, earn rewards, and build loyalty,” Voss said in a press release.
“Synchrony is approaching that opportunity from both sides: bringing OpenAI into the experiences it creates for customers and partners, while deploying our most advanced models and tools across its own enterprise,” she said.
ChatGPT plugin and internal deployment
As part of the announcement, Synchrony said it is launching a ChatGPT plugin that lets consumers browse its marketplace deals, promotional financing options and partner offers. The company is also rolling out OpenAI’s latest models internally to accelerate product development.
The moves come as OpenAI prepares for what could be a massive initial public offering, adding pressure on the company to transform ChatGPT into a broader platform for online commerce.
For Synchrony, the partnership is a bet that embedding AI into the card-issuer’s digital experience will keep its portals competitive in an era where AI-driven shopping assistants become a more common way for consumers to discover and buy products.
