Prediction markets see tame July CPI, below Wall Street consensus

Prediction-market traders are bracing for a relatively tame July inflation print, with odds suggesting the consumer price index lands below the Dow Jones consensus forecast when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the report Wednesday morning.

Event contracts on Kalshi show less than a 55% likelihood that July’s year-over-year CPI comes in above 3.3%, according to Monday’s odds. Traders see just a 15% chance the reading is hotter than 3.4%.

By contrast, economists polled by Dow Jones expect headline inflation to arrive at 3.4% on an annual basis — a slight cooling from June’s 3.5% rate. The June figure itself came in well below the 3.8% consensus estimate at the time.

Core inflation odds

The picture looks similar for core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices. Kalshi traders assign a 47% probability that July’s core rate comes in above 2.4% year over year, and only an 11% chance it exceeds 2.5%. The Dow Jones consensus, meanwhile, calls for core inflation of 2.5% for the 12 months through July, down from June’s 2.6% reading.

The CPI measures the average change over time in prices consumers pay for a broad basket of goods and services, and it remains a critical input for the Federal Reserve’s rate deliberations. Policymakers are set to meet in September, and Wednesday’s data will factor directly into whether they decide to adjust rates.

The inflation backdrop has been improving in fits and starts. June’s headline CPI fell 0.4% month over month — the sharpest monthly decline in more than six years — driven largely by a temporary drop in energy prices. That helped pull the annual rate down from earlier levels, though the path back to the Fed’s 2% target remains uneven.

The Kalshi event contract asking for July’s year-over-year CPI rate will be verified against the official BLS release, making the prediction market a real-time gauge of where traders think inflation is headed.

Markets will get the definitive answer when the BLS publishes the July CPI report on Wednesday morning.
