U.S. personal computing and printing giant HP has signed a multi-year global agreement to license certain WiFi patents from Chinese telecoms equipment maker Huawei, the companies announced Wednesday.
The deal underscores how Huawei’s technology continues to gain traction outside China, even though the U.S. placed the company on its Entity List in 2019, restricting American firms such as Google from doing business with it.
Patent pool background
The agreement follows a patent dispute involving HP, Huawei, and other companies that was resolved last fall. That resolution allowed HP to access a pool of 2,000 patents covering wireless network connectivity. Huawei was a founding member of the patent pool, known as Sisvel WiFi 6.
Terms and commentary
The new global cross-licensing agreement includes “valuable reciprocal patent rights from HP,” according to Steven Geiszler, who represented Huawei in the negotiations. Geiszler, based in Texas, was a senior in-house intellectual property lawyer for Huawei for nearly a decade until he launched his own firm in April, with Huawei as his primary client.
HP is scheduled to release its quarterly earnings Thursday morning Beijing time. The company was created in 2015 when Hewlett-Packard Company split into two separate entities, with HP focusing on PCs and printers.
