The widow of the man killed during the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump is speaking publicly about her belief that the attack involved more than a lone gunman.
Helen Comperatore, whose husband Corey Comperatore died shielding his family from gunfire at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024, shared her perspective on the shooting in an interview with NewsNation published on the second anniversary of the incident.
Corey Comperatore, a volunteer fire chief, was struck and killed when shots rang out at the rally. The gunfire also grazed Trump’s ear and wounded two other attendees before Secret Service counter-snipers killed the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Claims of Broader Conspiracy
In the interview, Helen Comperatore said she does not believe there was a second shooter at the rally itself. However, she expressed conviction that Crooks did not plan or execute the attack alone.
“I believe that he was working with somebody. I believe it was an inside job. Inside the government somewhere,” she told NewsNation.
When asked whether she views the shooting as politically motivated, she responded affirmatively. Helen also suggested she has information supporting her theory, saying she has “been told things” and experienced something afterward that helped her “put the pieces together.”
“It just made total sense,” she said, though she did not elaborate on the specific evidence or information she was referencing.
Seeking Accountability and Answers
According to NewsNation, Helen Comperatore said she would only find closure when those she believes orchestrated the attack are identified and held responsible.
“When the people who put this all together that day are caught. And it comes out,” she said when asked what would bring her peace.
She also directed a message to President Trump, urging him not to forget the victims and their families as time passes.
“Don’t forget us, and remember what we went through that day. You know? We’re still here. We need answers,” she said.
The July 2024 shooting marked one of the most serious security breaches at a political event in recent history. Multiple investigations into security failures at the Butler rally have been conducted, though questions about how Crooks was able to access a rooftop with a direct line of sight to the stage remain a subject of scrutiny.
Helen Comperatore’s comments come as the incident continues to be examined by congressional committees and others seeking to understand how the attack occurred and whether security protocols were properly followed.
