Uber said Wednesday it will cut 10% of its workforce as part of a broader effort to flatten its management structure and reduce costs, according to an email CEO Dara Khosrowshahi sent to employees.
The ride-hailing company said the layoffs are designed to make Uber “simpler and faster” while freeing up resources for future investments, including its previously announced plans to commit more than $10 billion to autonomous vehicles in the coming years, Khosrowshahi wrote in the email.
Uber’s shares rose nearly 2% in morning trading following the announcement.
The company declined to comment on the exact number of jobs affected. Uber had roughly 34,000 employees at the end of 2025, according to its annual filing, implying the 10% cut would affect about 3,400 workers.
Khosrowshahi said the reorganization is intended to reduce layers of management and speed up decision-making. Specifically, Uber plans to cut small teams consisting of one or two direct reports by nearly half, and to trim the number of employees who are seven steps away from the CEO by 20%.
“A leaner organization will mean clearer ownership, faster decisions, and more time spent building rather than coordinating,” Khosrowshahi said in the email.
The company is also combining more teams and concentrating more employees in major hubs like New York and San Francisco. About 1% of employees will be allowed to continue working remotely, Khosrowshahi said.
Uber joins a growing list of tech companies that have moved to flatten their management structures in recent years. Google and other tech giants have made similar changes to improve efficiency and accelerate decision-making.
Khosrowshahi did not attribute the cuts to artificial intelligence, which has been a factor behind a recent wave of tech layoffs across the industry.
“The changes we’re making today are designed to do two things: make Uber simpler and faster, and create more capacity to invest in our future,” Khosrowshahi wrote in the email to staff.
