U.S. forces carried out a strike on two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island on Sunday, after observing Revolutionary Guard troops preparing to fire sea mines into the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to U.S. Central Command.
Navy Capt. Tim Hawkins, a CENTCOM spokesperson, confirmed the operation in a statement, saying the launchers were struck after Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were seen preparing rockets equipped with sea mines for launch into the waterway.
“I can confirm that earlier today U.S. forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island. Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces were observed preparing to launch rockets with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz,” Hawkins said.
The strike marks the first publicly acknowledged U.S. attack on Iranian positions since late July, according to The Associated Press. The conflict, now in its sixth month, has severely disrupted shipping through the strait, a vital corridor for global energy supplies.
Hawkins noted that CENTCOM had completed clearing sea mines from the strait’s international shipping routes last week. He added that U.S. forces continue to monitor the area closely and remain ready to protect the free flow of commerce through the essential waterway.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards acknowledged the strikes, reported casualties, and said they would respond, according to AP.
The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected.
