President Donald Trump didn’t mince words when asked about Prince Harry and Meghan’s departure from the United States. During an Oval Office gaggle, a British reporter asked Trump about the Sussexes’ move back to the U.K. — and he answered without hesitation.
“I’m happy about it! I was NOT a fan,” Trump said, according to PJ Media.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and later settled in Montecito, California, have reportedly returned to Britain to enroll their children in British schools. PJ Media reported that the family is staying at a Cotswolds estate loaned to them by Ian Wace, a British billionaire hedge fund manager and longtime friend of both Prince William and Prince Harry. The arrangement allowed the couple to keep their properties in Montecito and Portugal while living temporarily in the U.K.
‘Great Disrespect’
Trump elaborated on his feelings, saying he believed the couple had treated the royal family poorly. “They treated the royal family with great disrespect. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the way she acted,” he said, referring to Meghan.
He went further, suggesting that he would not have welcomed them back into the fold. “I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the Queen, to King Charles. I don’t know. Maybe I’m different. I wouldn’t have taken them back,” Trump said.
The president also took time to praise the senior royals, noting his warm relationships with both the late Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III. “I have a very good relationship with the Queen. Really good,” he said. “I have a really good relationship with King Charles — when he was Prince Charles and King Charles. I’ve known him for a very long time. Great guy.”
A History of Barbs
Trump and the Sussexes have clashed before. The couple previously suggested that Trump was one of the reasons they left the U.S., though PJ Media notes that this claim is widely doubted given their decision to re-enter public life in Britain.
The Sussexes have been estranged from much of the royal family since their explosive Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021 and the release of Harry’s memoir. They have reportedly been cut off financially and socially, with limited contact with senior royals.
In July, however, Harry and Meghan did visit King Charles at Highgrove, his residence in the Cotswolds, while staying nearby. PJ Media speculates that this could be one of their last family gatherings with the royals, as Charles is battling an undisclosed form of cancer and has been putting his affairs in order.
What’s Next for the Sussexes?
PJ Media columnist Victoria Taft predicts the couple will eventually sell their Montecito mansion and that Meghan will pivot her lifestyle brand and media projects to the Cotswolds estate. Whether that comes to pass remains to be seen, but Trump’s blunt remarks add another chapter to the fraught relationship between the former president and the royal couple.
