Trump Praises Fed Chair Warsh While Calling for Lower Interest Rates

President Donald Trump voiced support for Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh on Monday but criticized other Fed board members, saying they have "bad intentions" for not lowering interest rates ahead of this week's policy decision.

Trump Praises Fed Chair Warsh While Calling for Lower Interest Rates

President Donald Trump offered praise for Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh on Monday while simultaneously pressing his case for lower interest rates and questioning the motives of other central bank officials who have resisted easing monetary policy.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump described Warsh as “fantastic” but suggested the Fed chairman faces obstacles from politically motivated colleagues on the Board of Governors.

“He wants to do the right thing. I know what he wants to do,” Trump said of Warsh. “Kevin’s fantastic, but he’s got a board, and the board members are very political, I would say.”

The remarks came just two days before the Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled to release its latest interest rate decision. Markets are largely expecting officials to hold rates steady, as they have throughout 2026, though traders are pricing in roughly a one-in-three chance of a quarter percentage point increase, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool.

Fed Officials Signal Inflation Concerns

Several Federal Reserve officials have recently expressed worry about persistent inflation pressures. Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan, a voting FOMC member this year, went furthest in advocating for tighter policy, suggesting that benchmark rates should be “modestly higher.”

Trump, however, accused some Fed officials of harboring ulterior motives in their policy deliberations.

“You need the consent of some people that have perhaps bad intentions. Rates should be lowered,” the president said. “This country could be at 8%, 9%, 10%, 12% [annualized growth of] GDP. That’s what it should be.”

The president went on to argue that the United States should maintain the world’s lowest interest rates, a position he said the country held three decades ago.

Current Rate Environment

The Fed’s benchmark overnight borrowing rate currently sits in a range between 3.5% and 3.75%, where it has remained since the central bank cut rates by three-quarters of a percentage point during the second half of 2025.

That level essentially matches the Bank of England’s policy rate but stands above the European Central Bank’s 2.25%, Japan’s 1%, and China’s 3%.

The president’s public criticism of Fed policy decisions has been a recurring theme during his time in office, though the central bank maintains its independence from political pressure in setting monetary policy. Trump’s selection of Warsh as Fed chairman represented a key appointment, and his latest comments suggest tension between the president’s desire for easier policy and the cautious stance of other Fed officials concerned about inflation.

All eyes will now turn to Wednesday’s FOMC decision, which will reveal whether the committee follows through with another hold or surprises markets with a rate increase amid continuing inflation pressures.
