President Donald Trump on Sunday attacked NBC “Meet the Press” host Kristen Welker over remarks she made about his endorsement record, suggesting she should be reported to the Federal Communications Commission for what he called a “purposeful inaccuracy.”
In a Truth Social post, Trump said Welker had claimed he has had “mixed results” with candidates he endorsed in this election cycle. He wrote, “How can anyone be allowed to say this, working for freely given Public Airwaves? Because of this purposeful inaccuracy, she will be reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment.”
Welker’s comment was not aired on Sunday’s broadcast of “Meet the Press.” Instead, she made the remark during a pre-show segment on WRC-TV, a local Washington, D.C., affiliate, according to CNN’s Brian Stelter, who posted about it on X.
In that segment, Welker noted that Trump “is going to loom large over these midterms” and that he has “had some mixed results” in primaries. She cited recent losses by Minnesota gubernatorial candidate and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell and Iowa gubernatorial candidate Rep. Randy Feenstra. She also pointed to a win: Senator Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, who won her South Carolina primary and will face Dr. Annie Andrews.
Trump’s attack on Welker comes as the Treasury Department barred economics reporters from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg from attending this week’s G20 meetings in North Carolina, according to the Times. The department said nearly 300 media members were accredited, including at least one other Times reporter, but the three outlets’ journalists were not granted credentials.
The exclusions mark the latest instance of the Trump administration restricting press access. Last year, the Pentagon imposed a strict press policy that led nearly all major media outlets to leave rather than comply.
Trump has long derided the media as “fake news,” but his FCC chief, Brendan Carr, has shown a greater willingness to act on alleged bias in the president’s second term. Carr previously called for action against Jimmy Kimmel over comments on his ABC show, which the network briefly pulled from the air before restoring it.
In his social media post, Trump appeared to direct Carr to go after NBC, writing, “The Press is a Disgrace to our Nation, and I hope that Chairman Brendan Carr, and the fine people of his Commission, will take this Threat to our Country very seriously.”
In an earlier post, Trump also criticized media election polling, writing, “THE FAKE POLLS USED BY OUR CROOKED MEDIA ARE OUT OF CONTROL, AND SOMETHING MUST BE DONE ABOUT IT. FCC TO THE RESCUE!”
Trump stormed out of an interview with Welker earlier this year after being pressed on his “weaponization” fund and his unsubstantiated election fraud claims.
