President Donald Trump escalated his confrontation with Tehran on Wednesday, announcing a sweeping new economic offensive against the Iranian regime that he dubbed “Economic D-Day.” The move comes after the administration confirmed it was no longer engaged in any talks with Iran and follows weeks of escalating tensions in the region.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had squandered its best chance at a deal, writing: “No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me. TRAGICALLY, for them, they have failed to take it. Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!”
The president described the new measures as “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” citing the regime’s weakened military position and collapsing currency. He warned that any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran would itself face “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences.”
Warning to Sympathetic Nations
Trump explicitly called out governments he said were sympathetic to the Iranian regime — including Qatar, China, Pakistan, and Russia — cautioning them not to try to circumvent the new measures. “You know who you are,” he wrote. “This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat.”
The president’s announcement targets a broad range of financial channels, including oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies, which he said “all needs to stop NOW.”

Trump framed the sanctions as a decisive blow against the regime’s ability to project terror, declaring: “These maniacs are on the ropes, and these HISTORIC MEASURES will cripple them and their ability to project terror worldwide. IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON.”
Heightened Regional Tensions
The announcement follows a period of intense friction between Washington and Tehran. Trump had earlier teased the idea of claiming the Strait of Hormuz for America, and his administration confirmed it had broken off all talks with the Iranian regime.
Iranian officials have continued to issue bellicose statements. Mohsen Rezaee, former head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and now secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has previously suggested using nuclear weapons against the United States and continues to speak of Trump’s death and America’s defeat. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei regularly posts threats against the “great Satan” online.
IRGC Commander-in-Chief Ahmad Vahidi boasted this month: “As long as the United States and Israel possess nuclear weapons, we will continue working on them for our national security. If they disarm, we will disarm.”
The regime has also claimed to have planted assassination teams within the United States and recently declared it could launch attacks on American soil. Iranian authorities, meanwhile, executed Shahram Sadeghi, one of those arrested during nationwide protests in January 2026, according to reports.
Trump’s decision to abandon further negotiations and pursue maximum economic pressure marks a decisive turn in his approach to Tehran. The new sanctions are set to take effect immediately, with the administration vowing to hold both Iran and its would-be enablers accountable.
