Billionaire sports mogul Stan Kroenke has agreed to purchase a controlling stake in Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels, according to a release from Kroenke Sports and Entertainment. The deal, which will see Kroenke take over from the Moreno family, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The acquisition gives Kroenke Sports and Entertainment ownership across every major professional sport in the United States — and deepens its footprint in the Southern California market, where Kroenke already owns SoFi Stadium and the surrounding Hollywood Park district.
Kroenke’s expanding empire
The Angels joining KSE’s portfolio adds to a roster that already includes:
- The NFL’s Los Angeles Rams
- The NBA’s Denver Nuggets
- The NHL’s Colorado Avalanche
- Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids
- The National Lacrosse League’s Colorado Mammoth
- The Premier League’s Arsenal Football Club
Kroenke, who serves as owner and chairman of KSE, said in the release: “The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market. We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”
KSE was valued at more than $26 billion in CNBC’s most recent ranking of the world’s most valuable sports empires, published in June.
SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park
Kroenke also owns SoFi Stadium, which is home to both the Rams and the Chargers, as well as the 300-acre Hollywood Park entertainment district in Inglewood. Kroenke spent more than $5 billion building the stadium, which has become a centerpiece for major events in the region.
The Angels deal marks a notable shift for the Moreno family, which has controlled the franchise for 23 years. In a statement, Arte Moreno said: “The Moreno Family has been honored to steward the Angels for 23 years and we believe with KSE’s experience and success they are the best next owner for the franchise.”
The transaction is still subject to customary regulatory approvals, including likely review by Major League Baseball’s ownership committee. The deal is expected to officially close in early 2027.
