Seattle city officials have approved spending $300,000 to subsidize transgender and LGBTQ individuals relocating from other parts of the country, according to a report from PJ Media. The move comes as the city grapples with a reported budget crisis and a shortage of roughly 400 full-time police officers.
The funding, drawn from a local business payroll tax on large companies with highly paid employees, was originally intended to support ‘Green New Deal’ initiatives. Now, it will be channeled through LGBT-friendly nonprofit organizations to provide housing and food vouchers for people arriving from what city officials describe as ‘hostile jurisdictions.’
Activists Push for Emergency Declaration
Seattle’s LGBTQIA+ organizations have been sounding the alarm since May about an influx of transgender individuals fleeing perceived hostility in other states. The Seattle LGBTQ Commission sent a letter to the City Council and Mayor Katie Wilson requesting a formal state of emergency declaration to secure additional funding.
However, local radio host Ari Hoffman pointed out that the commission’s own letter admits the city has no data showing how many people are actually relocating to Seattle due to ‘red-state trans oppression.’ Hoffman characterized the situation as an ecosystem where ‘militant progressive activists repeatedly manufacture emergencies and then position themselves as the only people qualified to solve them with public money.’
While Seattle has not formally declared itself a sanctuary city, neighboring large cities have enacted such policies. The $300,000 allocation effectively extends similar support without the official label.
Previous ‘Trans Genocide’ Claims
This is not the first time local activists have demanded emergency measures. Earlier, transgender advocates and the nonprofits serving them urged the city to declare a ‘trans genocide’ and trigger a state of emergency. They cited confusion over bathroom access, claims that trans individuals were being ‘put on lists,’ and instances of mental instability as evidence of genocide.
At a recent City Council meeting where the funding was approved, a local reporter, Brandi Kruse, observed a masked individual—described as resembling an Antifa-style protester—menacing women during and after the proceedings. Kruse noted that the masked person and others were allowed to taunt attendees calling for budgetary restraint, adding that Seattle City Hall is not a safe or welcoming place for conservatives.
The report from PJ Media, a conservative outlet, criticizes the decision as prioritizing out-of-state newcomers over local needs, given the city’s ongoing public safety and budget challenges. Critics argue the payroll tax revenue should be directed toward hiring more officers and addressing drug addiction issues in the streets.
The city has not yet released data on how many individuals have actually relocated to Seattle under this program, and it remains unclear how the $300,000 will be distributed among the nonprofits.
