Market Odds Fall on Strait of Hormuz Returning to Normal Traffic

Prediction market Kalshi shows traders betting against a quick resolution to disruptions in the critical oil shipping route, with odds dropping sharply this week following U.S. strikes on Iranian targets.

Market Odds Fall on Strait of Hormuz Returning to Normal Traffic

Market participants are growing increasingly skeptical that maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz will return to normal anytime soon, according to trading activity on prediction market Kalshi.

As of Friday afternoon, the odds that ship traffic through the strait will normalize by July 2027 had fallen to 47%, down from nearly 70% just two days earlier. The sharp decline followed the U.S. launching a 13th consecutive night of strikes against Iranian targets, with President Trump signaling in a Thursday interview with Axios that a further “massive attack” against Iran was planned.

The near-term outlook appears even bleaker. Traders on Kalshi are pricing in only a 38% chance that traffic will return to normal by the end of this year, while odds stand at 48% for a resumption of regular shipments before April 2027.

What the Data Shows

Kalshi’s event contract is structured to resolve if the seven-day moving average of transit calls exceeds 60, based on data verified by IMF Portwatch. Currently, that seven-day moving average sits at approximately 12, highlighting the dramatic reduction in shipping activity through the critical waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital chokepoint for global oil markets, with roughly one-fifth of the world’s petroleum passing through the narrow passage between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.

Houthi Attacks Complicate Timeline

Adding another layer of complexity to the situation, Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen claimed responsibility for attacking two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea. Matt Smith, Kpler’s director of commodity research, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” that the Houthi involvement introduces a new “dimension” to the timeline for the strait’s reopening.

“We’re pushing that reopening into next year,” Smith said.

In a Thursday post on Truth Social, Trump said he would hold Iran responsible if the Houthis carry out additional attacks.

Diplomatic Efforts Emerge

Despite the escalating tensions, diplomatic channels remain active. Reuters reported Friday that Pakistan is pushing for peace talks between the U.S. and Iran, with support from China, according to three Pakistani sources cited in the report.

The market odds reflect traders’ assessment that even with potential diplomatic intervention, the complex web of regional conflicts and retaliatory strikes makes a quick resolution unlikely. The dramatic shift in probability over just 48 hours suggests that recent military actions have fundamentally altered market expectations for how long disruptions to this critical shipping route may persist.
