Maria Bartiromo is pushing back hard against media reports that she was fired from her long-running roles at Fox News and Fox Business, with her attorney issuing a blistering denial on Friday.
“The irresponsible reports that have been published stating that Maria Bartiromo was fired or is no longer an employee of Fox are absolutely and unequivocally false,” her attorney said in a statement. “Make no mistake, we have the receipts and witnesses and they will come out whether through the courthouse or otherwise. Those reporting her firing or the incredulous facts supporting that fiction have exhibited a complete and utter reckless disregard for the truth.”
Fox News responded to the attorney’s comments on Friday by noting that its earlier statement “speaks for itself.”
The dispute stems from Thursday, when Fox Corp.’s Fox News Media announced that Bartiromo had parted ways with its networks. The company offered no explanation for the departure, saying only, “We thank Maria for her work over the last 12 ½ years and wish her all the best on her next chapter.”
Since that announcement, various media outlets have reported that Bartiromo was let go because she violated company policy. Bartiromo’s legal team did not specify what legal action might be forthcoming, but the statement’s reference to “the courthouse” signals a potential lawsuit.
A prominent media career
Bartiromo, a former CNBC anchor, has been a major presence on Fox’s business and news channels. She hosted the daily show “Mornings with Maria” and the Friday program “Maria Bartiromo’s Wall Street” on Fox Business Network, along with “Sunday Morning Futures” on Fox News.
Her departure comes more than two years after Fox agreed to pay $787.5 million to settle a defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems. Fox had made false on-air allegations that Dominion helped rig the 2020 presidential election, and Bartiromo was one of the anchors named in the case. She had been scheduled to testify if the suit went to trial.
Bartiromo is also a defendant in a similar ongoing defamation lawsuit filed by Smartmatic USA, another voting technology company that has accused Fox of spreading false claims about election fraud.
Fox News remains the top-rated cable TV news channel in the United States, according to the network’s own reporting.
