OpenAI’s leadership turnover continues. Brad Lightcap, one of the company’s longest-tenured executives and a close confidant of CEO Sam Altman, announced his departure on Tuesday, according to a post on X.
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018 and held several senior roles, including a four-year stint as chief operating officer. He stepped down from that position in April to focus on “special projects,” with chief revenue officer Denise Dresser taking over most of his responsibilities. Now, he says he’s leaving to “start something new.”
“I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent most of the last decade pursuing our mission and building this company,” Lightcap wrote. “Sitting here today, mission success feels within sight. It has been the honor of my life to help bring us to this point, and to do it alongside all of you.”
Altman responded in his own post, recalling their early conversations about OpenAI “when it sounded totally crazy and you were one of the few people that got it.” He added, “since then, you have taken on any function and challenge openai has needed; we would not be where we are without you.”
The two worked together at Y Combinator, the startup incubator Altman led before co-founding OpenAI.
Another key loss
Lightcap’s exit is the latest in a wave of executive departures as OpenAI works to justify its $852 billion valuation and prepares for a highly anticipated initial public offering.
Last month, Fidji Simo, who had been OpenAI’s product and business chief, said she was stepping down to focus on recovery from a “severe exacerbation of a chronic illness.” In April, three other executives announced their departures: Bill Peebles, who led the now-defunct short-form video app Sora; Kevin Weil, vice president of OpenAI for Science; and Srinivas Narayanan, tech chief of B2B Applications.
The April reshuffle also saw Lightcap moved out of the COO role, though he remained at the company.
Building the go-to-market engine
During his tenure, Lightcap played a central role in OpenAI’s commercial expansion. Over an 18-month stretch through mid-2025, he built the company’s go-to-market team from roughly 50 people to more than 700, including sales representatives and staff focused on customer success, developer relations, and strategic partnerships.
That push began in 2023, following the launch of GPT-4 and ChatGPT Enterprise, as OpenAI sought to translate its consumer success into the enterprise market and compete with rival Anthropic. Clients began arriving “from every direction,” Lightcap told CNBC in an interview about a year ago.
“Among the most rewarding parts of this journey for me has been watching each of these teams mature under brilliant leaders,” Lightcap wrote on Tuesday. “I am excited for the next decade in the hands of this incredibly capable team.”
OpenAI did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
