Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said recently declassified journal entries from Anthony Fauci’s tenure as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases reveal that Fauci experienced a serious medical event months after receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, but never informed the public.
According to Kennedy, Fauci’s journals show he suffered a pulmonary infarction in June 2021. A pulmonary infarction is a condition in which lung tissue dies, typically caused by a pulmonary embolism — a blood clot that blocks an artery supplying the lungs. Studies conducted since the vaccines’ rollout have identified cardiac and clotting events among potential side effects.
Fauci received the Moderna vaccine on national television in December 2020, during a highly publicized event aimed at demonstrating the vaccine’s safety. At the time, he expressed what he called “extreme confidence” in the vaccine.
Kennedy Calls Nondisclosure ‘Peak Hypocrisy’
Speaking to Fox News, Kennedy characterized the nondisclosure as a significant breach of public trust. “He took the Moderna vaccine on national TV, telling a very, very highly publicized press conference, to show people that it was safe. Then he got one of the primary, most expected adverse events, which was potentially deadly blood clots in his lung,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy emphasized that Fauci “kept that secret from the American public, and we only learned about it because of his diary.” He noted that Fauci had access to top-tier medical care at facilities such as Walter Reed, while continuing to encourage others to receive the vaccine without disclosing his own experience.
“Meanwhile, he was telling other people to take this product, and concealing the fact that he himself, after announcing this press conference to show it was safe, had actually gotten very, very sick from an injury that was highly expected, and highly likely to be caused by the vaccine,” Kennedy stated.
Additional Journal Entries Draw Scrutiny
Kennedy also pointed to a 2022 journal entry in which Fauci reportedly documented disagreement with then-CDC Director Rochelle Walensky. According to the entry, Walensky was prepared to acknowledge publicly that the vaccines were not effective at preventing viral transmission, but Fauci opposed the disclosure, concerned it would undermine vaccine mandates and public confidence in upcoming booster shots.
The revelation adds context to the ongoing debate over vaccine transparency and the handling of public health communications during the pandemic. Vaccine mandates were implemented across numerous sectors, often justified by official assurances of safety and effectiveness from public health authorities.
Fauci served as NIAID director from 1984 until his retirement in December 2022. He became the public face of the federal government’s COVID-19 response and was a frequent presence at White House briefings during the pandemic’s early phases.
The release of Fauci’s declassified journals has prompted renewed scrutiny of decision-making processes and communication strategies during the pandemic response. Kennedy’s comments reflect broader questions about transparency in public health guidance, particularly when officials making recommendations may have personal experiences that differ from their public messaging.
