Jill Biden is raising a new, eyebrow-raising theory about her husband’s disastrous June 2024 debate performance against Donald Trump: that someone may have spiked his drink.
In an interview with author and entrepreneur Jamie Kern Lima that aired Thursday, the former first lady was pressed on what her “gut” told her about why President Biden performed so poorly on the debate stage — a night that set off a political firestorm and ultimately led to his withdrawal from the 2024 race.
“I can’t figure it out. That is my honest-to-God true answer. I don’t know,” Jill Biden said, according to PJ Media.
When Kern Lima noted that “there’s so many conspiracy theories online,” Jill Biden acknowledged they “will go on forever.” Kern Lima then pushed harder, reminding her that she “was there” and knows her husband “better than anyone on the planet,” asking whether she truly had no gut instinct about what happened.
“No, I mean, there’s all kinds of theories, you know,” Jill replied, before listing off a series of mitigating factors. “He had been traveling, I know he was tired, he didn’t feel well that day when I saw him, but there was nothing definitive that I could point to.”
She also sought to distance herself from the immediate pre-debate period, telling Kern Lima, “I had been on the road for two weeks up until that moment. So I wasn’t with him. I didn’t see him days before, weeks before. I saw him, maybe one hour before.”
Then came the remarkable exchange. Kern Lima raised the possibility of foul play, asking, “And there’s no way anyone could have, God forbid, laced his drink or something.”
“Who knows, who knows,” Jill Biden replied.

Critics: Theory Defies Logic
The suggestion drew immediate skepticism from critics, who note the implication is deeply problematic: either someone on Biden’s own team sabotaged him, or the Trump campaign did. Either way, the theory strains credibility, they argue.
PJ Media’s Matt Margolis, who reported on the interview, pointed to an apparent contradiction in Jill Biden’s own account. She has previously said she sat in the audience that night and grew so alarmed by her husband’s performance that she wondered if he was having a stroke. Yet, according to her own telling, the couple went to three more events that same night.
“If you genuinely believed your husband might have suffered a stroke or been drugged on national television, you don’t shrug it off and go work a room,” Margolis wrote. “You get him to a hospital.”
The Bidens did neither, he noted, and Jill Biden has also claimed that doctors examined the president immediately after the debate and pronounced him fine — while simultaneously calling the whole episode “inexplicable.”
A Pattern of Deflection?
The remarks are the latest in a series of attempts by the Biden camp to explain away what critics say was plainly visible to the American public over four years: persistent cognitive decline.
Margolis characterized the new interview as an effort to “rewrite history” and absolve Jill Biden of responsibility for not intervening sooner.
“All these excuses and conspiracy theories are her attempt to absolve herself of responsibility for it,” he wrote.
The debate performance in June 2024 — marked by halting answers, frozen moments, and a hoarse voice — triggered widespread panic among Democrats and led to intense pressure on Biden to drop out of the race. He did so weeks later, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement.
Neither Jill Biden nor the White House has offered any evidence to support the drink-tampering theory, and no such claim was made in a formal setting.
