Israel’s military ordered evacuations in southern Lebanon on Monday, telling residents to leave areas near a planned strike on a Hezbollah facility, the latest sign that a U.S.-brokered ceasefire is failing to contain near-daily violence.
In a post on X, Israeli military spokesperson Ella Waweya urged people in a building in Deir al-Zahrani — and in adjacent structures — to “evacuate immediately” and move at least 300 meters away. The site, she said, was near a Hezbollah facility the army intended to target, warning that anyone remaining “puts you in danger.”
Ceasefire under strain
The evacuation order marked only the third time Israel has issued such a warning since the June ceasefire, following a first order on Aug. 5 and a second on Sunday.
The Israeli military accused Hezbollah of a “blatant violation” of the truce, saying an explosive drone had been launched toward its forces and that this was pushing the army “to act against it forcefully.”
Violence has continued across the region despite the ceasefire, with sporadic Israeli strikes and Hezbollah drone attacks. Last month was the deadliest since the truce, with Israeli airstrikes killing at least 11 people and wounding 19 in southern Lebanon.
Deadly weekend strikes
At least seven people, including two women, were killed in Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon on Sunday, with six others wounded, according to Reuters, citing Lebanon’s Health Ministry. Israel described those strikes as retaliation for Hezbollah drones fired at its forces.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun called the strikes “a dangerous escalation” that targeted “purely civilian administrations and health centres.” His office also appealed to the U.S. and the international community to help stop the attacks.
Wider conflict toll
Lebanon was drawn into the broader regional war in March, when the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group formally joined the fighting. That prompted Israeli airstrikes and a ground invasion, extending a conflict that Lebanon says has killed at least 4,300 people and wounded over 12,000 since March 2.
The new evacuation warning underscores how fragile the June ceasefire has become, even as international efforts to stabilize the region continue.
