Hyundai Motor has pulled the wraps off its newest luxury flagship: the Genesis GV90, an all-electric large SUV that seats up to seven and introduces a fresh design language for the brand. The vehicle, unveiled Tuesday, marks a significant step for Genesis as it pushes deeper into the premium EV segment in the U.S.
The GV90 is the largest vehicle Genesis has offered since entering the U.S. market a decade ago, and it expands the brand’s U.S. lineup to seven vehicles. Hyundai said the SUV will compete against a crowded field of large electric SUVs, including the Cadillac Vistiq and Escalade IQ, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and the Rivian R1S.
“Today marks a landmark arrival for Genesis and for the future of luxury mobility,” Hyundai CEO José Muñoz said in a statement. “GV90 opens a new chapter for Genesis, building on our track record of bold innovation, elevated customer experiences, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Two variants, including coach doors
The GV90 will be offered in two variants. The standard GV90 trims feature conventional swing doors, while the GV90 Neolun adds coach doors — also known as suicide doors — that open from the middle of the vehicle. That design, more common on high-end limousines, makes entry and exit easier but is hard to engineer to meet safety standards. Genesis said it has done so, despite the absence of a middle pillar in the Neolun.
“Safety remains paramount in the GV90 Neolun, despite the absence of a [middle] pillar. Genesis engineered a new structure that seamlessly marries the doors to the vehicle body while maintaining the highest safety standards,” the company said.
A “First Edition” of the GV90 will also be available, featuring special badging and plush materials such as wool cashmere.
Powertrain and range
Genesis said the GV90 features a new high-performance electric motor system producing up to 490 kilowatts — about 660 horsepower — and 800 Newton-meters of torque, or roughly 590 foot-pounds. The company estimates the SUV will have an EV range of about 310 miles.
The exterior design, which includes a vehicle-wide dual light that meets at a center point, was previously previewed as a concept in 2024.
U.S. production and sales timing
The GV90 will be built at a new Hyundai facility in Ulsan, South Korea, and is expected to go on sale in the U.S. early next year. It will be the fourth EV in Genesis’ U.S. lineup. Pricing has not been announced; Hyundai said it will disclose pricing closer to the vehicle’s arrival.
Genesis declined to say whether the GV90 could also be offered as a hybrid or gas-powered vehicle, a move it has made with other nameplates such as the GV70 SUV and G80 sedan. That hesitation may reflect changing market conditions: U.S. EV sales have slowed over the past year, partly due to the end of federal support by the Trump administration, including the elimination of up to $7,500 in purchase incentives.
Genesis’ U.S. sales through the first six months of this year rose roughly 5% from a year earlier to 39,088 units. The brand has posted 22 consecutive months of year-over-year sales growth, according to Hyundai.
