Newly surfaced text messages from Anthony Fauci’s government phone are reigniting a long-simmering controversy over COVID-19 vaccine safety for pregnant women, according to Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who chairs the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
Johnson disclosed the findings Monday on Fox News’ America Reports, saying his committee has downloaded the former top infectious disease official’s phone and is working through its contents. The messages, which PJ Media first reported on Monday, show Fauci privately expressing concerns about the possibility of vaccine-induced miscarriages—even as he publicly assured pregnant women the shots were safe.
At the center of the exchange is a Jan. 25, 2021, text conversation between Fauci, then-Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, and Rochelle Walensky, who was leading the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at the time. Johnson said Fauci acknowledged in that thread that the second vaccine dose triggers a stronger cytokine storm, which he linked to a possible increase in first-trimester miscarriages.
A Study’s Buried Numbers
Johnson tied that private admission to a June 2021 study in the New England Journal of Medicine by Tom Shimabukuro, the CDC’s head of safety and surveillance. The study tracked 827 confirmed pregnancies and recorded 104 miscarriages—officially labeled “spontaneous abortions.” That works out to a 12.6% miscarriage rate, roughly four times the typical 3% baseline.
But Johnson argued the true figure is far more alarming. Of those 827 women, 700 received the shot in their third trimester—after the 20-week point when a miscarriage can no longer occur. Excluding them leaves just 127 women who got vaccinated in the first or second trimester. Among that group, Johnson said, the miscarriage rate jumps to roughly 82%.
Johnson also accused Shimabukuro of deleting emails related to the study, both on his own devices and from Department of Health and Human Services servers. He called for a full investigation into possible Federal Records Act violations.
Allegations of a Cover-Up
When Fox News host John Roberts pressed Johnson on how far Fauci’s public statements strayed from his private words, Johnson was blunt: “Yes, they lied.”
Johnson pointed to an April report indicating that Peter Marks, the FDA’s vaccine safety chief, discovered his own monitoring algorithm was masking serious safety signals. After switching to a corrected algorithm, officials logged dozens of red flags over four months—including sudden cardiac death, pulmonary infarction (a condition Fauci himself suffered in June 2021), Bell’s palsy, and multiple strokes.
Johnson framed the episode as a deliberate effort to maximize vaccination rates and suppress vaccine hesitancy. “The narrative was more important than the safety of unborn children,” he said.
What’s Next for Fauci
Fauci pleaded the Fifth 111 times last week during a deposition rather than answer questions under oath, Johnson noted. The committee has invited him for a transcribed interview, and Johnson said he would issue a subpoena if Fauci’s attorneys decline.
With 34,000 text messages and 522 voicemails still to review, Johnson signaled the investigation is far from over. “This story is only getting started,” he said.
