Elon Musk has publicly acknowledged that his deep dive into politics may have gone too far, offering a rare moment of self-reflection following his controversial stint in government efficiency work.
“I think I got a little too involved with politics,” the SpaceX CEO told The Economist in a recent interview for the publication’s The Insider video series. “I got carried away, frankly,” he admitted.
The comments come after Musk played a significant role in the 2024 presidential election, contributing substantial financial support to President Donald Trump’s campaign. Following Trump’s victory over former vice president Kamala Harris, Musk was tapped to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, known by its acronym DOGE.
DOGE’s Brief but Controversial Run
The department drew sharp criticism for implementing widespread job and funding cuts across the federal government during its short existence. True to its planned timeline, DOGE officially ceased operations on July 4. In a statement posted to its official X account, the department said that while its formal mission had concluded, “the mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse will continue.”
Musk defended the department’s core objectives in his interview with The Economist, framing the work as essential fiscal housekeeping. “The goal with the sort of DOGE stuff was to try to do something about the deficit, which is massive, where the interest payments exceed the amount of money spent on the Department of War,” he explained.
The Tesla CEO elaborated on the scale of the fiscal challenge, noting that when combining all spending on what is now the Department of War and intelligence operations, the total falls short of the government’s interest payments on the national debt.
Defending the Approach
Despite the backlash, Musk stood by the necessity of scrutinizing federal spending. “We need to take a close look at spending and make sure that money is being spent in sensible ways and that it is not wasted or spent on fraudulent activities,” he said.
The billionaire acknowledged receiving significant criticism but suggested much of it stemmed from a misunderstanding of DOGE’s operations. “I got a lot of flak from this, obviously, but the people don’t understand just how simple it was for the DOGE team to approve payments,” he stated.
Musk’s relationship with President Trump has fluctuated throughout the administration. Despite any tensions, the tech entrepreneur was among those accompanying the president on a recent diplomatic visit to China, indicating he remains within Trump’s inner circle.
The admission that he became overly immersed in politics represents an unusual public acknowledgment from Musk, who has never been known for stepping back from controversial positions or initiatives. Whether this reflection signals a genuine retreat from political involvement or simply a momentary pause remains to be seen.
