Democrats are heading into the 2026 midterm season with a familiar problem: their socialist wing keeps winning primaries, and the party’s “big tent” response isn’t holding up under scrutiny. According to a recent PJ Media column, the tension is threatening to turn what should be a favorable cycle into a defensive slog.
The polling has long shown that socialism is a loser with most American voters — and that’s not a secret inside the party. Yet socialist-aligned candidates are gaining ground in competitive districts, giving Republicans a ready-made line of attack for every Democratic nominee on the ballot this fall.
A Built-In Follow-Up Question
The column argues that it only takes a few candidates saying the quiet part out loud to put the entire party on its heels. Reporters covering competitive House races now have an obvious question for every Democrat: “Do you agree with your party’s socialist candidates, or don’t you?”
There’s no easy answer. Endorse the socialist wing, and swing voters may bolt. Reject it, and the activists who handle much of the party’s field organizing could stay home in November.
This dynamic is compounded by the party’s financial troubles — described as a pile of committee debt and fundraising problems that are creating something close to a five-alarm fire heading into election season.
Fetterman and the Limits of the Tent
Democrat leaders often describe their party as a big tent, with room for everyone from Wall Street donors to democratic socialists. But the column points to the push to oust Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) as evidence the tent isn’t as inclusive as advertised. Fetterman’s offense? Refusing to march in lockstep with the far left on Israel, the border, and socialism. Leftist activists are now recruiting a primary challenger to unseat him.
Kayleigh McEnany, co-host of Fox News’ The Five, laid out the contradiction during Monday’s show, arguing that Democrats cannot have it both ways.
“You cannot have a broad caucus with communists that are very much at odds with the foundation of our governing system,” McEnany said.
She cited the Democratic Socialists of America’s platform, which now calls for scrapping the Senate, the Supreme Court, and the presidency itself. “I’m not using hyperbole there. That’s the new platform,” she said.
McEnany also relayed a comment from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who told her the “barbarians are in the gate” — a reference to far-left candidates winning primaries nationwide.
A Roster of Socialist Candidates
McEnany rattled off a list of socialist and far-left candidates gaining traction. Darializa Avila Chevalier, she noted, “used the American flag as a napkin.” Claire Valdez, on track to win her race, celebrated her primary victory with a declaration that included “Solidarity forever, abolish ICE, free Palestine, organize your union, join the DSA.” And Melat Kiros in Colorado, when asked whether 9/11 was inevitable, replied it was “inevitable in the sense that we destabilized a lot of the Middle East, which led people to believe that another act of violence was the only response.”
By contrast, the column notes that only just over a dozen House Democrats signed onto a “blue dog” platform of capitalism, fiscal responsibility, and patriotism. McEnany called the blue dog Democrat “an extinct species.”
A Fight for the Party’s Direction
Which group is driving the party’s energy and enthusiasm right now? McEnany was blunt: “Those people aren’t welcome in the tent; they’ll burn down the tent. Not welcome in the caucus; they’ll tear down the caucus.”
The column concludes that every socialist primary win doesn’t just secure a nomination — it hands Republicans a talking point that will follow every other Democrat on the ballot through November. Combined with a party short on cash and in debt, the socialism problem is more than a messaging headache. It could decide whether Democrats spend the next two years in the majority or explaining what went wrong.
