Kellyanne Conway offered a sharp critique of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) during an appearance on Fox News’s The Five this week, describing the progressive lawmaker as a political performer whose actual legislative record fails to match her high-profile image.
“AOC stands for Always On Camera,” Conway said. “She is a performer, not a reformer. She went to Washington to legislate; that’s her job. She’s a pontificator, not a legislator.”
According to PJ Media, Conway pointed to a stark statistic: during four years under President Joe Biden, Ocasio-Cortez passed just a single bill. Conway argued that someone who struggles to legislate will often pivot to other pursuits — like maintaining an online presence and deflecting questions about presidential ambitions with laughter. Conway suggested that kind of response would be “embarrassing and a disaster” on the world stage.
Credibility Questions
Conway also took aim at Ocasio-Cortez’s attempts to distance herself from her earlier, more radical statements, noting that her changing positions invite skepticism about her core beliefs. Conway drew a sharp comparison, asking whether the New York Democrat’s politics shift with the seasons or the weather, and called the excuse-making “disgraceful.”
The former Trump adviser tied Ocasio-Cortez to failed Wisconsin gubernatorial candidate Francesca Hong, arguing both had shown themselves untrustworthy to voters.
Conway did, however, grant Ocasio-Cortez one notable achievement: her shocking primary upset of longtime incumbent Joe Crowley, a victory Conway called the best thing the congresswoman has ever done. According to Conway, that moment of genuine disruption has since been traded on as a brand — the fresh face, the outsider — even as Ocasio-Cortez approaches ten years in Washington.
PJ Media notes that Ocasio-Cortez is also one of only ten Democrats to vote against a resolution condemning the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, casting that vote just eleven days after the assault.
Failed Endorsements
Conway highlighted 2024 as a difficult year for Ocasio-Cortez’s political standing. She cited Vice President Kamala Harris’s loss despite spending over a billion dollars, alongside Ocasio-Cortez’s unsuccessful endorsements of Reps. Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, both of whom lost their primaries.
Conway called Ocasio-Cortez a “performative progressive” running “stunts and grunts” instead of delivering results for constituents. The broader argument, as PJ Media frames it, isn’t really about policy — it’s about authenticity. Conway warned that voters who “tweet first and think third and fourth” will pay a price for it at the ballot box.
The critique lands as Ocasio-Cortez has spent a decade cultivating the image of an insurgent fighting the establishment. Conway’s point, per PJ Media, is that the insurgent has effectively become the establishment — with little to show for it.
