A fresh round of testing suggests that when it comes to core New Testament teachings, at least two major AI systems are sticking to the script—literally.
This week, the truth-seeking organization Just Facts released results from a test of ideological bias in four major AI products: ChatGPT, Grok, Google Gemini, and Claude. The test posed 100 questions designed to detect left- or right-leaning bias in the systems’ responses. According to Just Facts, the results were revealing—and not just as evidence that the old computer adage ‘garbage in, garbage out’ still applies to artificial intelligence.
The group also reported that the AIs provided what it called a ‘staggering number of specious sources’ to back up their answers.
But Mark Tapscott, a veteran investigative journalist and the founding editor of HillFaith, a Christian apologetics ministry, saw an opportunity. He wondered how the AI systems would handle questions about the most-read book in history: the Bible.
Tapscott put five questions to ChatGPT and Grok4, each touching on enduring theological controversies—questions about Jesus’ identity, his resurrection, and whether he is the only way to heaven. He expected the systems might show an agnostic or atheistic bias. Instead, he was surprised.
‘Both AI systems answered those five questions directly, factually and with no evidence of skewering the answers in a theologically questionable direction,’ Tapscott wrote.
Take Grok4’s response to whether Jesus is the only way to heaven. The system cited John 14:6, where Jesus says, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’ It also cited Acts 4:12—’salvation in no one else’—and 1 Timothy 2:5, which refers to one mediator, ‘the man Christ Jesus.’
‘The New Testament writers present these as core, interlocking claims rather than optional interpretations,’ Grok4 responded. ‘Different Christian traditions debate details of application, but the texts themselves are explicit on the points above.’
Grok4 was equally direct on the resurrection. It affirmed a bodily resurrection, citing 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 and the Gospel accounts of the empty tomb and physical appearances.
ChatGPT’s answers, Tapscott said, were ‘remarkably similar’—laying out the relevant scripture passages without raising questions about their legitimacy.
Tapscott then pushed Grok4 further, asking why so many alternative interpretations of these verses exist. Grok4 offered five factors, including one that stood out: presuppositions about the supernatural and history.
‘A naturalistic starting point (miracles do not occur) leads many scholars and liberal theologians to reinterpret the resurrection as the disciples’ experience of Jesus’ ongoing significance, a series of visions, or a later legend rather than a bodily event on the third day,’ Grok4 said. ‘Traditional and confessional readings do not start from that restriction.’
Tapscott noted that the phrasing could have been more dismissive—saying ‘rationally assuming’ instead of just ‘a naturalistic starting point’—but it wasn’t. He called the result encouraging.
Still, he remains wary. ‘I remain open to the very real possibility that somewhere, someone will ruin a good thing like AI by applying leftist GIGO,’ he wrote.
