For more than a decade, critics have painted the Republican Party as fundamentally racist, with Donald Trump cast as the chief villain. But a key primary result this week has added fresh ammunition to the counterargument, according to conservative columnist Eric Florack in PJ Media’s ‘Eric’s Daily.’
Byron Donalds, a Black congressman from Florida, secured the Republican nomination for governor on Wednesday, winning outright with roughly 48% of the vote in an 11-candidate field. His nearest rival, Lt. Gov. Jay Collins, trailed by 23 points. If Donalds wins in November, he would become Florida’s first Black governor in state history.
Florack highlights a crucial detail: Donalds received an early, enthusiastic, and very public endorsement from Trump — before Donalds even officially entered the race. That backing, Florack argues, undermines the narrative that the GOP and Trump are racially hostile.
Polling and Political Context
Current polling shows Donalds leading Democratic nominee David Jolly 45% to 38% in the general election matchup. Florida, a reliably red state, would by the left’s logic be one of the most hostile and racist states in the Union, Florack writes. Yet its overwhelmingly red electorate just handed a Black congressman a blowout primary win, powered in part by Trump’s endorsement.
‘Either the single most powerful figure in the Republican Party just handed his earliest, loudest, most consequential endorsement of the entire election cycle to a black man running to shatter a 200-year ceiling in one of the largest states in the country — or the ‘most racist party in history’ narrative has been running on fumes and repetition for a decade,’ Florack wrote.
Historical Precedents Cited
Florack points to Republican President George H.W. Bush’s nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court in 1991 as another counterexample. He also criticizes Democrats for what he calls racial identity politics, citing President Joe Biden’s 2020 remark to Charlamagne Tha God that ‘If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.’
Additionally, Florack cites Michigan progressive House candidate William Lawrence, who was caught on a 2024 podcast accusing Black lawmakers of serving as ‘a pillar, frankly, for establishment, capitalist, imperialist American power.’ Lawrence later called his words ‘clumsy’ and said they were taken out of context.
The column concludes that Democrats will continue to supply material for the ‘GOP is racist’ narrative, but that Donalds’ rise may finally force a reckoning.
