Apple Hits $5 Trillion Market Cap for First Time

Apple briefly touched a $5 trillion market capitalization on Tuesday, marking the first time the tech giant has reached that milestone. The achievement came one day after Apple surpassed Nvidia to become the world’s most valuable publicly traded company.

The iPhone maker’s shares, which reached an intraday high of $342.89 before pulling back slightly, have climbed 25% so far this year, outperforming other megacap technology stocks. Apple is scheduled to report quarterly earnings on Thursday.

Capital Spending Strategy Sets Apple Apart

Apple’s market performance stands in contrast to other tech giants that are heavily investing in artificial intelligence infrastructure. While Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft are collectively spending hundreds of billions of dollars on capital expenditures for AI buildouts this year, Apple has maintained relatively low capex spending. Instead, the company is utilizing cloud infrastructure and AI technology from Google.

The contrasting strategies have fueled a shift in investor sentiment. Last year, concerns mounted that Apple was falling behind in the AI race by limiting its investments and delaying the launch of an upgraded Siri assistant, which is now slated for release this fall alongside new iPhone hardware. Recently, however, the narrative has reversed as investors grow worried that aggressive tech spenders are accumulating significant debt and experiencing negative cash flow without clear paths to substantial returns.

Apple and Nvidia Battle for Market Leadership

The competition between Apple and Nvidia for market capitalization supremacy reflects broader questions about the future of artificial intelligence. Nvidia, whose graphics processing units power most major AI models, became the first company to reach a $5 trillion market cap in October. However, Nvidia’s stock has gained only 6% this year, making it a relative underperformer compared to Apple’s rally.

Apple’s stock surge has continued even as the company has raised prices on its devices due to a global memory shortage. According to CNBC, the company announced on Tuesday a new program called Upgrade that will allow U.S. customers to lease iPhones and other products rather than purchasing them outright. Last month, Apple increased prices on MacBooks and iPads for the first time to pass higher memory and storage costs along to consumers after CEO Tim Cook acknowledged the increases had become unavoidable.

Leadership Transition Ahead

Thursday’s earnings call will mark a significant transition for Apple, as it will be Cook’s final earnings announcement as CEO. John Ternus is set to take over as chief executive on Sept. 1, beginning a new chapter in the company’s leadership.

The milestone market capitalization underscores Apple’s resilience in a technology sector grappling with questions about capital allocation, AI investment strategies, and the path to profitability for emerging technologies.
