Cerebras Stock Climbs 4% After Announcing AMD Partnership for AI Systems

Cerebras Systems saw its stock price increase roughly 4% on Thursday after announcing a partnership with Advanced Micro Devices that will bring the two chipmakers together on artificial intelligence infrastructure projects.

Speaking at AMD’s AI conference in San Francisco, Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman revealed that his company’s chips will be incorporated into AMD’s Helios AI systems deployed in Cerebras data centers beginning later this year. The arrangement will also allow server purchasers to configure AMD systems with Cerebras’ distinctive wafer-scale chip technology.

The collaboration underscores the rising significance of ultra-low latency in the AI sector. Cerebras’ chips are engineered to deliver initial AI responses as rapidly as possible, though this approach involves trade-offs in flexibility and overall power consumption. The companies stated their combined system would deliver five times higher tokens per second per watt compared to competing solutions.

Industry Focus on Speed

The emphasis on low-latency performance is reshaping the AI chip landscape. Rival chipmaker Nvidia made a significant move in this direction last December when it acquired assets from Groq for $20 billion, aiming to incorporate that company’s low-latency capabilities into its own systems.

“When something’s a necessity, people want to use it, and they want to use it quickly,” Feldman said at the event.

Volatile Trading Since IPO

Cerebras went public in May and has experienced considerable price swings in its early months as a public company. After pricing its initial public offering at $185 per share, the stock surged to as high as $386.34 during its debut before retreating to below $161 in late June. Thursday’s gain pushed shares to $219.80.

In January, Cerebras secured a major contract with OpenAI to supply 750 megawatts of computing power through 2028, a deal valued at more than $10 billion. The agreement represents one of the largest commitments in the AI infrastructure space and positions Cerebras as a key supplier to one of the industry’s most prominent players.

At Thursday’s conference, AMD also detailed new chip offerings and provided additional information about its Helios integrated system, which forms the foundation of the partnership with Cerebras.
